How does it work?

Microneedling uses tiny needles set within a pen-shaped device. The technology aims to create a precise injury to the skin’s surface, prompting the body to respond by forming new tissue layers of elastin and collagen fibers. The skin plumps and thickens in response to this stimulus, and the channels made from the microneedles allow topical serums to be absorbed more effectively into the top layer of skin.

What can I expect during the treatment?

At Total Glow in Palo Alto microneedling is an in-office treatment that does not require general anesthesia. First, the skin is cleansed and treated with a topical numbing cream to minimize any discomfort. The procedure takes 20-30 minutes, depending on the area treated. Some pressure sensations may be felt, however they will not be painful.

The skin will be red for 24-48 hours, similar to a sunburn. However, recovery depends on the length of the needle used. The skin may also feel flushed, tight, and itchy for the first 24 hours. It can take between 6-8 weeks before visible signs of skin regeneration are seen, and the regeneration will continue to evolve over time. Although a single treatment can provide a noticeable result, a series of 2-3 treatments spaced by 6-8 weeks is recommended for optimal results.
